March 2025
Together with its partners, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) has released the prerelease version 3.0.0 of the VDA 5050 guideline. This marks an important milestone and opens new possibilities for the integration of mobile robots with various autonomy levels – whether track-guided or free-navigating.
As an active member of the VDA 5050 core team, idealworks has significantly influenced the development of the guideline for more than three years. The company’s dual role is particularly valuable: as a provider of an open fleet management system and as a manufacturer of an autonomous mobile robot (AMR). This bidirectional and synergistic expertise enabled idealworks to actively drive the integration of free-navigating mobile robots into the VDA 5050 guideline – for example, through the development of groundbreaking concepts.
This experience was also crucial in the latest version of VDA 5050: in addition to general revisions, AMR-specific adjustments were a primary focus, ensuring that the standard remains future-proof.
Key Updates in VDA 5050 Version 3.0.0
- Zone Concept: Introduction of a concept for defining specific zones for free-navigating vehicles
- Path-Sharing: Development of a scheme for sharing planned paths between different systems
- Operating Modes: Expansion of application areas to autonomous robot fleets
- General Revisions: Clarifications and adjustments to the existing guideline based on feedback from the community and the core team
With these comprehensive updates, version 3.0.0 paves the way for even more effective standardization and integration of mobile robots with all levels of autonomy. This facilitates the integration into idealworks’ robotics ecosystem and the orchestration via the intelligent automation platform, AnyFleet.
Outlook
Version 3.0.0 of VDA 5050 is currently available as a pre-release on GitHub. After further reviews, the final version is expected to be officially released in summer 2025.
